Effie, the youngest of three of their dad Tone and stepmother Mimi, is a 27-year old temp waitress in between jobs after getting laid off from an events position. Her parents got divorced and she has to go back to their family home before it gets sold by her dad and his new girlfriend Krista, who Effie despises. All the passive-aggressive exchange between Effie and Krista, who Effie called a gold-digger, causes a rift between Effie and her dad. After receiving an “anti-invitation” from Krista for a last party in the family home, she decides to refuse her invitation. However, she remembers that her beloved Russian nesting dolls are still in the house. She makes it a mission to retrieve them on the night of the party without getting caught.
Effie thinks it would only take her 10mins to sneak in the house, grab the dolls, and go back home but she encounters one obstacle after another on her mission. This leads to her discovering family secrets while eavesdropping and watching her family as she hides from them.
This book is a perfect mix of family relationships, sweet romance, and acceptance. I expected it to contain more romance than anything but I honestly didn’t mind the stories of each character. Effie’s character development rises throughout the book and it’s nice to see her reconcile with her father and her old flame. It’s funny because Krista embodies the perfect annoying young girlfriend that really got on my nerves. I just wanted her out of their family right away. This is a really touching book that captures family ties. This is another beautifully written book by Sophie Kinsella that I couldn’t put down.
