This book is about a nineteen-year-old Vivian Mortis who comes from a well-off family in a small town. The year was 1940 and she was kicked out from Vassar College. She decides to move to New York City to stay with her Aunt Peg, who owns the theater Lily Playhouse. There, she meets people with colorful backgrounds and personalities. She also serves as the costume director of the theater. One night, her life turns upside down and her perfect Navy brother rescues him, tainting their relationship. At eighty-nine years old, she narrates her story through this book.
I enjoyed reading this book because it’s not mainly about romance— it’s about independence, sexual freedom, living life at the present, and breaking stereotypes. However, life’s not all fun and when liberties are pushed too much, consequences arise.
